Traditional Vacuum Insulation Panels (VIPs) have either a polymer/aluminum film or metallized polymer film exterior. In either case the VIPs are too fragile to be directly attached to a building’s envelope without a superstructure. The required superstructure reduces the R value gain from using a VIP. We have developed a VIP with a stainless steel foil exterior that can be attached directly to a building’s envelope without a superstructure. We have a thermal model that shows that by lengthening the VIPs edge by a factor of 4 the R value of the VIP can be maintained as long as it is larger than 1 foot square. The stainless steel foil has the additional advantage of having lower permeability to atmospheric gasses, as well as being able to withstand a 120 mph wind.
