Description
Prism Solar Technologies, Inc. (PST) has developed a unique proprietary Holographic Planar Concentrator (“HPC”) film technology for use in photovoltaic (“PV”) module applications. The company manufactures a transparent holographic film that collects sunlight, selects the most useful portions of the spectrum, and focuses that light onto adjacent solar cells in a new type of proprietary PV module.
Prism Solar’s strategic advantage lies in the core, patented HPC technology. By incorporating holographic film into a photovoltaic module, 50% of solar cells – the most expensive component of a PV module -- are replaced with inexpensive holographic film, which lowers the module cost per watt dramatically. The result is an HPC module that produces 25% more energy (kWhs) over a year’s time compared to a conventional module with an equivalent peak watt rating. Extrapolated over the life of a PV system, this additional kWh production represents a substantial increase in revenue.
Viewed another way, a Prism Solar system can be sized smaller and produce the same amount of energy. For example, a 200MW conventional plant will produce the same amount of kWhs as a 150MW Prism Solar plant. Increasing the energy yield offers numerous advantages on the system level by reducing the number of peak watts needed to produce a given number of kWhs. The more kWhs generated per peak watt means a lower levelized-cost-of-energy (LCOE, or $/Wh) through reduced capital expenditure – including fewer interconnections and a smaller inverter size -- and a reduction in operation and maintenance costs for the system.
Prism Solar modules are also unique due to high performance in diffuse light, or cloudy conditions.
Prism Solar will build and sell 1 gigawatt of HPC film to solar module manufacturers worldwide. Currently, most major PV module manufacturers remain in a “commodity” module market with little product differentiation. This provides a significant opportunity for Prism Solar to offer greater margins and unique benefits through the use of our HPC product by enabling customers to achieve the increased kilowatt harvesting made possible by Prism’s technology. Prism Solar will also build and sell 60 megawatts of solar modules for US markets.
Prism Solar has partnered with the world's top system integration and module manufacturing companies. Prism's partners are currently testing modules and have orders in place to test small systems.
Prism’s management team is highly experienced in the PV industry. Rick Lewandowsi, CEO, has over 27 years of experience in solar. Glenn Rosenberg, CTO, was the original inventor of the HPC technology. Prism’s board of directors also has experience specifically in PV as well as in start-up companies.
