The session begins with an overview of federal requirements for sustainability. Executive Order (EO) 13423 established requirements for sustainability in 2007, while EO 13514 expanded upon that framework in October 2009. Participants will learn about the Federal guiding principles through an introduction to the Federal Leadership in High Performance and Sustainable Buildings Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by 21 Federal agencies in 2006. The MOU is not a legal mandate, but contains Federal goals for sustainability from energy and water efficiency to indoor environmental quality. After covering federal requirements of sustainability, the program briefly reviews the United States Green Building Counsel (USGBC) and LEED rating systems, specifically LEED for New Construction and LEED Existing Buildings: Operation + Maintenance rating systems. Participants will examine the requirements, intents, and strategies to achieve certification and relates those requirements to Federal sustainability requirements from EO 13514. The conclusion includes a summary of federal sustainability requirements and how the LEED rating systems can help federal project’s achieve those requirements and time for questions on all topics covered.
