Abstract:A new model for the determination of the temperature field in porous reforming anodes of SOFCs is presented. The model is implemented in a commercial CFD software package. Heat transfer, fluid flow and electrochemical reactions are simulated within a button-shaped SOFC element studied in experiments. The model is applied to investigate the temperature gradients and the reactive flow in graded anodes composed of multiple layers. The modeling effort aims to provide a comprehensive simulation platform for the study of the reactive flow in SOFCs to clean technology alternatives. Reliable modeling can be a valuable alternative to expensive experiments and can play a crucial role in fuel cell optimization especially when the measurements are not readily available.
