Abstract:This study is intended to find the optimum operational condition for the recovery of caustic soda solution from mercerization in textile process. As parameters, the silt density index (SDI) evaluation for the application of ceramic membrane, the contact angle measurement for the fouling investigation of NF membrane, the optimum condition for the membrane regeneration through chemical cleaning, the optimum removal condition of total organic carbon (TOC), turbidity, color and the permeate flux by the ceramic membrane and the polymeric membrane combined process were investigated. As results, the ceramic membrane (first step) and polymeric membrane (second step) combined process was found to be suitable for the removal of suspended solid, residual organics, turbidity including color and the recovery of caustic soda from wastewater caustic stream from mercerization process. The permeated caustic soda solution is able to be reused back into the mercerization next process, thus is able to offer economical benefits according to the reduction of the use of chemical and the cost of wastewater treatment.
