TechConnect Innovation Tracking: Ballistic Breaker Corporation, a TechConnect Accelerator participant-ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit, 2012
DC arcs are extremely difficult to extinguish, and Ballistic Breakers has designed a unique electromechanical technology (no transistors used) to avoid this problem by breaking a high power DC current without creating an arc while opening the circuit. This leads to a very robust DC circuit breaker that makes MVDC power transmission in microgrids, and eventually HVDC transmission in a supergrid practical.
The technology developed by Ballistic Breakers is currently in the prototype stage, supported in part by a $40k Mass Clean Energy Center Grant. In addition, the company has filed both a US utility patent and a PCT international patent.
Ballistic Breaker is currently in discussions with a major contractor about a potential joint collaboration agreement with the Navy.
Roger Faulkner, President & Founder of Ballistic Breakers, tells TechConnect that since participating at the ARPA-E Energy Innovation Summit 2012, he co-presented a scientific paper at the 2012 IEEE International Symposium on Electrical Insulation in March of this year; two papers at the Claverton Energy Conference in Birmingham, England (April 2012), and a presentation at TechConnect in Santa Clara in June 2012.
