Vijay V. Vaitheeswaran

VIJAY V. VAITHEESWARAN is an award-winning correspondent for The Economist.
He joined the staff in 1992 in London, and served as Latin America bureau chief from 1994 to 1997. From 1998 to 2006, he covered the politics, economics, business and technology of energy and the environment. His current portfolio now encompasses innovation, health and biotechnology.

Vijay is chairman of the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council of experts on sustainability and a speaker & panel chairman at WEF’s annual summit of world leaders at Davos. He has been elected a life member by the Council on Foreign Relations, and is a frequent speaker at the Clinton Global Initiative. He teaches at NYU’s Stern Business School, and his commentaries have appeared on NPR, the BBC and PBS’s NewsHour, and in the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times. He has addressed groups ranging from the US National Governors’ Association and the UN General Assembly to the TED, AAAS and Aspen Institute’s Ideas conferences.

His latest book, ZOOM: The Global Race to Fuel the Car of the Future, was named a Book of the Year by The Financial Times. He is also the author of Power to the People. John Holdren, reviewing that book in Scientific American before becoming President Obama’s Chief Science Advisor, called it “by far the most helpful, entertaining, up-to-date and accessible treatment of the energy-economy-environment problematique available.”

Vijay was born in Madras, India, and grew up in Cheshire, Connecticut. He was named a Truman Scholar by the U.S. Congress while at the Massachussetts Institute of Technology, where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering. He now lives in New York City.
