Dato’ Ir Dr A. BakarJaafar, is an engineer by profession and holds a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Newcastle, Australia, in 1973; a Master of Environmental Science from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio, 1976; and a Doctorate in Geography from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, in 1984.
He served in the Malaysian Civil Service for over 22 years in various positions including as the Director-General of the Department of Environment from 1990 to 1995. He continued to serve the Malaysian Government as the Elected-Member to the Commission on the Limits of Continental Shelf, UN HQ, New York (1997-2002) (2002-2007) (2007-2012).
He is also an Adjunct Senior Fellow of the Maritime Institute of Malaysia, an Adviser to the National Technical Committee on Continental Shelf, and Professor at the University of Technology Malaysia (UTM) at Perdana School of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy, as well as Co-Chair UTM Ocean Thermal Energy Centre (OTEC) Research Group, and as a leading-promoter of ocean thermal energy development in Malaysia.
Dato’ Ir Dr Abu Bakar sits on the Boards of Directors of several private limited companies and a public-listed company, Land and General Berhad.
