An internationally known economist and experienced leader in higher education, Dr. Denise Eby Konan became the Dean of the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa in 2012. She elevates student learning and research excellence across 14 programs of study.
Konan has published widely on trade policy, global trading systems, energy, and trade in services. Konan has conducted extensive fieldwork in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, and Hawaii. She has been a senior advisor and consultant to the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, and various ministries.
An economics professor at the UHM for over 20 years, Konan is an award winning teacher and a Leadership Fellow for Science Education for New Civic Engagement and Responsibility (SENCER). She has taught at the American Business School of Paris and Sichuan Normal University, in Chengdu, China.
Dr. Konan served as the first woman Chancellor of the UHM from 2007 to 2009 and among other executive appointments. She received her undergraduate degree from Goshen College and her doctorate from the University of Colorado.
