Professor Hiromichi Tanaka is a native of Nagano Prefecture, Japan. He is currently a Professor at the Tokai University School of Marine Science and Technology. His areas of expertise are in hydraulic and watershed engineering, and renewable energy – particularly in wood biomass gasification power generation and wave power generation.

In addition to his professorship, he also spearheads a project on overtopping wave power generation funded by NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization).

Prior to Tokai University, Professor Tanaka taught and conducted research on river and coastal engineering at Tohoku University and Hachinohe National College of Technology. He spent a year at the University of California at Berkeley from 1986 to 1987 under the sponsorship of the Japanese Ministry of Education.

Professor Tanaka received his PhD in Civil Engineering based on his research on “surface jet stream” from Tohoku University. He enjoys reading and listening to his wife, son, and daughter play the violin. His passion is in finding pathways for sustainable natural and societal systems.
