Okayama native and graduate of Waseda University. Faculty of Science and Engineering. Joined Fukutake Publishing (now Benesse Holdings) in 1973 and was appointed representative director and vice president in 1986. Corporate achievements under his management include acquisition of Berlitz International Inc. as a wholly owned subsidiary in 2001. Appointed representative director, chairman and CEO in 2007. Has spearheaded Inland Sea renaissance around Naoshima focused on art and nature for more than 20 years through Benesse Art Site Naoshima projects. Opened Chichu Art Museum in 2004 and was named an honorary citizen of Naoshima. Distinguished with many awards, including the AIJ Appreciation Prize (2010), and Montblanc de la Culture Arts Patronage Award (2012).
