Energy Reduction using Light-Diffusing Skylights

In order to reduce the electricity consumption of lighting in a distribution warehouse, we designed a lighting system that uses both light-diffusing skylights and fluorescent lamps with dimming controllers. Based on lighting simulation, the optimum arrangement of the skylights was determined such that the customer’s illuminance level requirement of over 200 lx was met. In addition, we experimentally determined that, in the case of this distribution warehouse, our lighting system, combining diffused skylights and artificial lighting with dimming control, reduced electricity consumption for artificial lighting by 61%. This result indicates that light-diffusing skylights have a significant energy-saving effect.
