Michael Yamane is Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) Chief of Operations. Yamane is responsible for the areas of Transmission and Distribution (T&D), Production, Engineering, Legislative and Regulatory Affairs and Safety. Michael holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa specializing in Computer Hardware and Software, Power and Control, and Communications. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of Hawai’i and is also a licensed commercial pilot with a multiengine/instrument rating.
Yamane joined KIUC (formally called Kaua’i Electric) in 1989 as an Associate Engineer. He has held a number of positions during his 22 years at Kauai Electric/KIUC, including Staff Engineer and Customer Engineer in the Engineering Department, Power Systems Engineer and Substation Operations Engineer in the Transmission and Distribution Department, Manager of the Information Services Department, Manager of Regulatory and Planning, Manager of Engineering, and most recently promoted to Chief of Operations. Yamane has also served as KIUC’s lobbyist at the State Legislature from 2002 to present.
KIUC is a not-for-profit generation, transmission, and distribution cooperative owned and controlled by the members it serves. Headquartered in Līhu‘e, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i, the cooperative currently serves more than 32,000 electric accounts throughout Kaua‘i. Committed to reinventing how Kaua‘i is powered, KIUC is aggressively pursuing diversification of its energy portfolio to include a growing percentage of hydropower, photovoltaic, bio-fuel, and biomass.
Michael and his wife, Valerie, reside in Kapa’a along with their two sons, Derek and Shawn.
