Navy Geothermal Program Office
Dr. Andy Sabin is the Director of the Navy’s Geothermal Program Office (GPO). GPO currently manages the Coso geothermal field, a 270 MW installed capacity geothermal field located entirely on the China Lake Naval Air Weapons Station in eastern California. GPO also conducts exploration on select Department of Defense-managed grounds worldwide toward identifying and developing utility-grade or direct use geothermal resources. Exploration reduces the risk to potential developers who would complete the development and plant construction and bring these systems on line under a public/private venture with DoD. The sale of electricity from Coso is a principle source of funding for the Department of the Navy’s renewable energy initiatives and entirely supports the salaries and programs of GPO.
Andy started working on geothermal systems in the early 1990s. In his 25 plus years of experience, he has worked with in the government and private industry with a focus on geothermal systems and ore deposits. His work has been largely in the US but includes projects in Asia, Australia and S. America.
Andy earned a BS in Geology from the University of Maryland, an MS in Geology from the University of Pittsburgh and a Ph.D. in Geology from the Colorado School of Mines. He is actively involved with several organizations including the Geological Society of America, the American Geophysical Union and the Geothermal Resources Council. He is currently on the Board of Directors with the GRC and was last year’s Technical Chairman for the GRC Annual Meeting.
