James “Jay” Griffin, Ph.D. is an Assistant Specialist at the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawai‘i (UH-HNEI). Jay has been on the UH-HNEI faculty for nearly three years and is currently the project manager for the Department of Energy-funded smart grid demonstration project on Maui. His presentation today will give an overview of this project that is currently underway. Prior to working at UH-HNEI, Jay was an energy policy analyst at the RAND Corporation in Santa Monica, CA and worked on a strategic energy plan for Israel’s natural gas sector and an assessment of a nationwide renewable portfolio standard (RPS) for the U.S. During this time, Jay received his Ph.D. policy analysis and energy modeling from the RAND Graduate School. Before starting at RAND, Jay was a legislative staffmember for former House Representative Hermina Morita and worked on Hawai‘i’s original RPS and net metering legislation.
