Abbas Akhil is a Principal Member of Technical Staff, Sandia National Laboratories, and has worked in the DOE/Sandia Energy Storage Program for 22 years. He is currently working to implement the US DOE/State of Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative for Kauai and Lanai islands and performed the first energy storage study for Kauai in 2006. He performed the early studies to quantify the benefits of energy storage for electric utilities through system specific studies for San Diego Gas and Electric, Oglethorpe Electric Cooperative and Chugach Electric Association. These studies eventually lead to battery energy storage projects in Fairbanks and Metadata, AK. In 1990 he was one of the founders of the Utility Battery Group (now the Energy Storage Association) and helped draft its charter. He has been involved in Distributed Generation for the last ten years and co-authored the CERTS Microgrid Concept paper. He co-developed the Energy Surety Microgrid concept for military bases that is now being prototyped in several locations.
