Honolulu City Council Chair Ernest Yorihiko Martin (“Ernie Martin”) was born and raised in Hawaii. He is the son of Ernest C. Martin, a retired U.S. Army Veteran, and Teruko Ikeda Martin, who came to Hawaii from Tokyo, Japan. His paternal great grandparents immigrated to the Big Island to work on the sugar plantation.

Ernie is a proud to be a product of Hawaii’s public school system. He graduated with distinction from the University of Hawaii with a Bachelors and Masters of Arts degree in Sociology and a Juris Doctorate degree from the William S. Richardson School of Law at the University of Hawaii.

Starting in an entry level position in the City’s Department of Community Services, Ernie worked his way up to the position of Acting Director where he worked to help various non-profit organizations acquire federal grants through the Community Development Block Grant program. With over 20 years of experience working within the City system, Chairman Martin is very knowledgeable of City operations. He is past Chairman of the Budget Committee and a member of the Executive Matters and Legal Affairs.
