Leon directs the System Integration Department at Hawaiian Electric Company, Inc. His responsibilities include oversight of distribution planning, transmission planning, renewable energy planning and integration, and system protection functions for Hawaiian Electric (island of Oahu), and its subsidiaries, Maui Electric Company, Ltd. (islands of Maui, Lanai, and Molokai) and Hawaii Electric Light Company, Inc. (island of Hawaii). In this capacity, he is responsible for the development of distribution and transmission resource plans for these islands, and the expansion and interconnection of renewable energy resources. Leon also oversees major programs across all three companies, including its advanced meter infrastructure and smart grid initiatives, and Hawaiian Electric’s commitment to integrate large-scale wind energy resources located on the islands of Lanai and Molokai via a proposed undersea cable system to Oahu. Leon has been with Hawaiian Electric for 17 years, most recently managing the System Planning Department, and previously as manager of the Power Supply Services Department which included responsibility for generation resource planning, procurement and distribution of fuel to utility generating plants on all islands in its service territory, and the negotiation of power purchase contracts for the utilities. Leon is also a licensed attorney and has worked in private law practice in Hawaii, held the position of Associate General Counsel in the Hawaiian Electric Legal Department, and worked in Hawaiian Electric's Rate and Regulatory Affairs, and Planning and Engineering Departments over his career. He holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and a J.D. from the University of Hawaii.
