Hawai‘i State Senator Fred Hemmings has had a diverse career in sports, business, and community service. Although he is best known as a versatile waterman, he has earned the reputation as an effective and vigorous nuclear energy advocate at the national level. Senator Hemmings is a strong proponent of clean, renewable and affordable energy which includes Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). This past year, he has given speeches about this breaking technology at three nuclear energy national conferences including a seminar sponsored by the Nuclear Energy Institute in Washington D.C.
Senator Hemmings has been at the inception of many initiatives, including working with Governor Linda Lingle and President George W. Bush in the creation of Papahanaumokuakea, the world's largest marine sanctuary. He specializes in innovation and thinking "out of the box".
