Hawaii Natural Energy Institute

Richard Rocheleau joined the faculty of the Hawaii Natural Energy Institute at the University of Hawaii in 1988 and was appointed Director in 2000, leading efforts to develop public-private partnerships for development, deployment and demonstration of alternative energy technologies. Major ongoing programs include: The Hawaii Energy and Environmental Initiative funded through the Office of Naval Research (ONR); the US DOE funded Hawaii Energy Sustainability program; the Maui Smart Grid Demonstration Project funded by the US DOE Renewable and Distributed Systems Integration (RDSI) program; and the National Marine Renewable Energy Center. Collaborating groups include all the Hawaii utility companies any numerous local and mainland companies.
