Mark Want joined DBEDT in 2000 as the department's Communications Director responsible for management of the Communications and Publications Office. In this role he served as the point of contact for external communications, and nexus for departmental and inter-agency communications. In 2002, he moved to the energy area and was given responsibility for DBEDT's strategic technology industry market development and international export promotion program which sought to facilitate Hawaii exports of technologies and related services, including those related to: renewable energy; energy efficiency; advanced, highly efficient fossil energy; and environmental engineering, planning, management, protection, and remediation. Since 2006, he has provided professional and technical support for the State’s statutory energy emergency preparedness planning and management functions. In this capacity he assists with energy security and assurance planning, energy emergency management, disaster response activities, and is involved in Hawaii Homeland Security initiatives. An avid traveller before having children, Mark has visited over 50 countries and has lived and worked in Micronesia, Thailand, England, Japan, and Australia. He is currently preparing to compete in the 2010 Ironman World Championship in Kona on October 9th.
