Robert Young joined Hawaiian Electric Company in 1978 and was assigned to perform planning studies of the generation, transmission and distribution systems on Oahu. After 10 years of planning work he moved to the operating area and had responsibility for the scheduling and commitment of HECO’s generating units and assisted with contingency planning and emergency response. With this operating experience he later assumed a leadership role responsible for Hawaiian Electric Company’s Energy Management System and the operations AM/FM mapping systems. While in this role he oversaw a software and hardware upgrade to the Energy Management System that extended the life of the system for several years.

Subsequently he was promoted to and continues in the role of Manager of the System Operation Department in which he has responsibility for the construction and maintenance of Hawaiian Electric Company’s substations, the operations communication infrastructure, system monitoring, system protection, the mapping system, the operations center, the Energy Management System and the Outage Management System. Robert was an integral member of the teams that implemented its new Siemens Energy Management System and the new Oracle Outage Management System. Robert was also an integral member of the team that assisted with the design of a state of the art dispatch facility that was built to provide a functional, reliable and secure operations center for the dispatchers to monitor Oahu’s electrical grid using the energy management and outage management systems. Robert holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and also a Masters of Business Administration degree with an emphasis in finance.
