Dr. Rand is a Professor at the University of Hawaii as well as the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Program Director at Kapiolani Community College in Honolulu, Hi. With graduate degrees in both physical science (Physics, MS, American University, 1988) and life science (Biomedical Sciences, PhD, University of Hawaii – John A. Burns School of Medicine, 1999), he has taught a wide variety of classes that range from the Science of Sleep (PHYL 160) and University Physics (PHYS 170) to Animal Physiology (ZOOL 430) and Graduate Neurophysiology (PHYL 618). He is the college’s Pre-engineering coordinator and representative to the UH College of Education’s Science Teacher Education Committee. He is an Associate Director for the Hawaii Space Grant Consortium and holds a governor appointed seat on the Hawaii Innovations Council. Currently, he is a Co-Principal Investigator on five National Science Foundation grants from the Human Resource Division and the Division of Undergraduate Education. Prior to coming to Hawaii, he worked for Optical Technologies Inc. in Herndon, Virginia as an optical engineer and laboratory manager designing, testing and constructing fiber optic sensor systems.
