Renewable Energy Program Manager, Strategic Industries Division-DBEDT

State of Hawaii

Maria Tome is a registered professional engineer with over twenty years of experience in renewable and transportation energy in Hawaii. She has directed and participated in renewable energy strategy development, resource assessments, policy analysis, and technical reviews of solar, wind, biomass, methane, hydropower, geothermal, ocean energy, fuel cells, and renewable portfolio standards; as well as projects in transportation energy, electric vehicles, hydrogen, ethanol, methanol, propane, biodiesel, and renewable jet fuels.

"Transforming our energy systems within a generation is possible, working together. It's also necessary, for the well-being of our economy and our state. However, it's neither simple nor easy.

"I'm still looking for the perfect analogy. Sometimes it seems that we're on a train, and we're changing the engine and replacing the fuel while the train is moving down the tracks. And the tracks ahead are being moved, too, by changing regulations, climate change, and global competition.

We need to stay focused, communicate well, and move quickly."
