Dr. Samir Kumar Khanal is an Assistant Professor of Bioengineering in Molecular Biosciences and Bioengineering Department at University of Hawai'i at Mānoa and Collaborating Assistant Professor at Iowa State University. Prior to joining University of Hawai'i, Dr. Khanal was a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil, Construction and Environmental Engineering at Iowa State University, Ames, IA from 2004 to 2007. Dr. Khanal was also a faculty affiliate at Biorenewables Program; Environmental Science, Center for Crops Utilization and Research (CCUR) and Biotechnology Program at Iowa State University. He also received two years of post-doctoral training in Biorenewables at Iowa State University from 2002 to 2004. Dr. Khanal obtained B.S. (First class with honors) in Civil Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, India, M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand, and Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering with focus in Environmental Biotechnology from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Hong Kong in 2002. Dr. Khanal teaches transport phenomena, biomass conversion to biofuel and bioenergy, renewable energy systems, bioprocess engineering, and environmental biotechnology, among others. Dr. Khanal has over 35 refereed journal publications since 2003. Dr. Khanal’s research focuses on application of physical, chemical and biological principles for the production of biofuel/bioenergy and valuable bio-based products from agri/forest-residues and biowastes. Dr. Khanal has served as a member of a review panel for the National Science Foundation and he is a regular proposal reviewer for California Energy Commission, US DOE and the US Department of Agriculture. He is a referee of over 20 different international journals in biotechnology, bioenergy and environmental engineering. He is a co-recipient of R&D 100 Award in 2008, 2008 Grand Prize for University Research presented by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and International Water Association (IWA) Project Innovation Award. Dr. Khanal also recently published a book entitled "Anaerobic Biotechnology for Bioenergy Production: Principles and Applications " (Bestseller, Wiley-Blackwell Publishing) and edited another book entitled "Biofuel and Bioenergy from Biowastes and Biomass" (American Society of Civil Engineers). Dr. Khanal is a registered professional engineer in the state of Iowa.
