President George Bush

THE WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON

October 30, 2007

I send greetings to those gathered for the 2007 Clean Technology and Sustainable Industries Fall Summit.

Keeping America competitive requires clean and affordable energy, and meeting our growing energy needs will require determination, discipline, and cooperation. Together, government and industry research in renewable and other alternative energy technologies can help change the way we live and ensure that America continues to lead the world in innovation. This Summit provides a forum for participants to exchange ideas and discuss sustainable industry practices and renewable energy technology so we can build a secure energy future for our children and grandchildren.

Including the 2008 Budget, my Administration will have invested over $15 billion in the development of cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable energy sources since 2001. The Advanced Energy Initiative that I announced in 2006 is building on this progress and helping diversity our renewable resources by substantially increasing funding for clean-energy research. To change how we power our automobiles, we are focusing on improving advanced batteries and hybrid technologies and moving forward on cutting-edge methods for producing cellulosic ethanol from materials like wood chips, stalks, and switch grass. The “Twenty in Ten” plan, announced during my 2007 State of the Union Address, seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by cutting gasoline usage 20 percent over the next 10 years. By harnessing the power of technology and applying the talent of America, we can reduce our dependence on foreign sources of energy and improve our environment.

I appreciate CTSI and all those who are committed to sustainable industry practices and clean renewable energy. Your efforts help strengthen our national and economic security and move us toward a clear, abundant, and affordable renewable energy future.

Laura and I send our best wishes.

President George Bush
