SEMATECH Nanoelectronics and Fabrication Knowledge for Alternate Energy

Over the next decade a complete new generation of disruptive-revolutionary technologies will emerge from the convergence of 21st century science and technology. These emerging technologies are critical to the stability and economies of all nations, and energy is at the forefront of this technology revolution. To strengthen energy related research and development, reapplication of nanoelectronics and fabrication knowledge hold dynamic potential. SEMATECH is well known in the nanoelectronics arena as an industrial research and development consortia. Over the last 20 years, SEMATECH expertise has been established in nanomaterials, nanofabrication, nanoelectronic device characterization, process equipment, device physics and materials physics, representing true nanotechnology. For example, transistor device lengths of 30nm [1], transistor gate insulators of 1nm [2] and doped Si junctions of 10nm [3] push the atomic limit. Based on this experience, in this paper we discuss reapplication of nanoelectronics and fabrication knowledge for high efficiency solar cell and energy storage devices.
