Applications of Polymeric Nanocomposite Gels for Li-air Batteries

Since the concept of Li-air battery introduced by some researchers at Lockheed Martin in 1980s, much progress has been made. The Li-air battery concept is revolutionary because of the low molecular mass of lithium, no need for storage of oxygen, and inherent high redox potential for Li/O2 pairs. The Li-air batteries potentially can have an energy density as high as 11 KWh/kg – 13 KWh/kg, a significant advantage over conventional electrochemical energy storage and conversion devices, such as Li-ion batteries and even fuel cells. Both organic and aqueous electrolyte based Li-air batteries have been reported. However, their performance is limited by the cathodes due to oxygen solubility and transport rate for the former and the anode due to parasitic and dangerous reaction with water for the latter. In this study, we will mitigate the aforementioned problems using polymeric nanocomposite gels. Based on what we have learned from our preliminary experimental studies, we will discuss a path forward.
