Detection of Adsorbates on Nanoparticle Surfaces during Water Remediation

Nanoparticles offer potential benefits in the removal of toxic species from water supplies due to their extremely large surface areas, providing opportunities for physical and chemical adsorption. However, the efficiency and kinetics of these adsorbates are not well understood at present. Quartz crystal microbalances (QCMs) can be used to monitor adsorption, due to their high sensitivity as mass detectors. In addition, we have shown that these sensors can be used at elevated temperatures to conduct decomposition studies, providing data on adsorbate chemistry. Here, we will present results on the use of QCMs to monitor the removal of toxic species from water systems by nanoparticles of varying sizes, illustrating the utility of these sensors for optimizing the nanoparticle parameters needed for maximum remediation.
