Michael J. Cumbo has twenty-eight years of experience in the photonics and microelectronics industries, and is a well recognized expert in lasers, precision optical fabrication, and thin-film coating technology. Dr. Cumbo recently joined NanoGram Corporation as a Senior Vice President, and has been assigned to lead the Company’s photovoltaic solar energy module business. In this capacity, he will report to the CEO of NanoGram, Dr. Kieran Drain.

Before joining NanoGram, Dr. Cumbo was the Chief Operating Officer of Raydiance Incorporated, a pre-IPO laser manufacturer of computer controlled ultra-short pulse (USP) laser systems for medical, genetic engineering, and defense related applications.

Prior to Raydiance, Dr. Cumbo served as the CEO of BinOptics Corporation, a pre-IPO compound semiconductor laser startup. He had previously held executive management positions with Coherent (COHR), JDS Uniphase (JDSU), and Optical Coating Laboratory, Inc. (OCLI). In the early years of Dr. Cumbo’s career, he worked as a process development engineer in optical components and microelectronics at Bausch & Lomb (BOL) and at Eastman Kodak (EK).   Dr. Cumbo was educated at the University of Rochester and at Rochester Institute of Technology. He earned a B.S. in physics, an M.S. in optical engineering, and a Ph.D. in optics at the U of R, and an M.S. in electrical engineering at RIT.
