Hybrid Vehicle Technology Development and Testing

Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEVs) and Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) offer the potential for higher fuel economy and lower emissions, as well as distinctive passenger amenities. Increasing vehicle electrification presents challenges to vehicle component suppliers, who must guarantee performance and reduce cost of this new technology. They also present new opportunities, including the potential for vehicle-to-building power transfer and powertrain (i.e., engine, motor, battery pack) and control system optimization for improved vehicle fuel economy, battery life, passenger comfort and reduced emissions. TIAX is employing both software modeling and hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) to address several PHEV challenges and explore these unique opportunities. This presentation will summarize some recent TIAX efforts to optimize hybrid vehicles using HILS and other TIAX facilities.
