Abstract:
While today there are no fixed standards or criteria for marketing a product, service or technology as ‘cleantech’, standards will emerge as the industry matures. This paper investigates the nascent problem of ‘who decides what is clean or green’ by analyzing the existing world of green certifications and eco-labels worldwide. It presents the results of a recent assessment of over 400 green certification and labeling schemes. An unbiased and clear understanding of the scope, successes and failures of existing environmental certifications and labels is of direct and timely use to the cleantech community at large.
